The opportunities for seeing wildlife are endless and mostly at Braelangwell’s doorstep, a walk up the glen could be rewarded with the possible sighting of deer, red squirrels, otters, eagles and salmon to name but a few. Other recommended areas are the mud flats of the Dornoch Firth for the many species of duck, wading birds and osprey, the Scottish Wildlife Trust at Handa Island on the West Coast for its sea bird population and the Cromarty Firth for the chance of seeing dolphin, porpoise and wales.
Local crafts include Anta and Tain potteries and Highland Stoneware at Ullapool.
There is ample opportunity to satisfy those interested in historical sites. A visit to Dunrobin is a must and this can be combined with the exhilarating falconry display performed in the Castle grounds. Slightly further afield is the Castle of Mey, home of the late Queen Mother. At the end of the Glen is Croick Church, a haunting reminder of the Highland Clearances. For those interested in military history there is the newly refurbished Visitors Centre at Colloden, the site of the final battle for the succession of the throne and nearby Fort George conceived to put an end to the uprisings.
For the garden lover there are some real gems at Dunrobin and Cawdor Castles, the Castle of Mey and on the West Coast, Inverewe.
